While I'm enjoying learning to play, I'm having to face the fact that I can't throw a typical backhand shot over a hundred feet or so.  I had rotator cuff surgery back in June, and, as a result, I just don't have the strength and mobility needed.  So, I'm working on my side arm.  While in Mayfield today, I did manage a good 325-350 foot shot at the down hill #7.  But, I'm having a problem with consistency.  Any tips for a consistant shot?  I'm sure I'll get better over time, heck, we've only been playing for 3 weeks now, so, I'm not doing too bad.

Also, what discs would be best for sidearm?  I'm currently using a Wraith DX, Skeeter DX, and an Aviar DX.  On most throws, the Wraith will turn left, then fade to the right at the end of it's flight.  The Skeeter, and Aviar, seem pretty stable, and fly pretty much at the angle of release.

Thanks,

David

I think there are just a few basic things to throwing a good forehand shot.   First, make shure that you grip the disc tightly.  Second, start with the disc back and your wrist stright and lead your throw with your elbow.  (point your elbow toward the target at first).   Third, snap your wrist forward at the end of the throw and point your first two fingers where you want the disc to go.   Don't worry about any runup at first.  Try taking just one step forward with your left foot and throw the disc as that foot hits the ground.   You can add more steps to your runup later.

As for consistancy.  Make shure you are gripping the disc tightly.  If the disc doesn't  fly smoothly thru the first 50' when ya chucked it.  That means you need to apply more grip pressure.  I pinch the disc tightly useing my thumb and first two fingers.  If you throw a overstable disc with the nose up (disc is angled like this / when it leaves your hand) it will tend to go way left before it comes back to the right.   I find that overstable to stable disc work good for me.     To get your Wraith to fly strighter and longer release it with the nose down a bit.

Thanks for the tips, and advice.  I'm slowly getting much more consistant with my throws.  Unfortunately, a couple of weeks ago at work, I reinjured my shoulder, so haven't been playing much.  We did go to Mayfield for a quick 9 today, even with the shoulder injury.  Today actually taught me a valuable lesson, that I've known in my head, but been unable to practice.  Throwing with a smooth rythm, instead of just giving it everything I can, produces much better results.  My throws were longer, and straighter.

As for discs, I've added quite a few to the bag since the original post.  My favorite long driver has become my Star Destroyer, or a Gateway Diablo.  Both have a pretty reliable flight path, and, the Destroyer loves to be thrown into the wind.  My backhand throws are getting much better too, but, I just can't get the distance like I do sidearm.
